Saudi High: Spelling Hypocrisy in Arabic (and in Latin)………….

Statements by a Saudi preacher, Mohamed al-Areefi, about the consumption of alcohol and drugs by international students and his calls that they be subjected to tests at the airport upon returning home stirred much controversy, especially among academics, who rejected what they regarded as a sweeping statement with no scientific basis……..
“With all due respect to Areefi, there are no accurate statistics that prove what he is saying,” he told Al Arabiya.
Oud added that Areefi, who posted his statements on his Facebook page and Twitter account, is a man of religion, but he cannot issue judgments on matters related to statistics and medical tests.
“He is not supposed to interfere in drug tests and propose that they be done in airports, since this is not only a medical issue, but also one related to security measures.”…….

This prominent Saudi cleric has proposed that Saudi students be tested for alcohol and drugs upon return, when they land at the airport. The premise is that they consume alcohol and smoke pot while in the West (especially just before flying home?). And I had thought most Saudi students are supposed to get drunk, nay get high, by listening to garbled speeches by the king and senior al-Saud princes. Some of them may get high listening to Wahhabi clerics.
The cleric declined to suggest the same tests for the Saudi princes who fly in and out of the country a lot, at public expense. They are the most likely consumers of banned substances outside the kingdom and inside the kingdom (very likely within the holy cities of Mecca and Madinah). I mean alcohol in Mecca and Madinah  could be deemed almost as bad as pedophilia inside a church. Wooops, your graces, sorry about that.

Blood Diamonds of the Gulf: from Bahrain to Britain…………..

The countess, 46, was given the gifts during a recent official visit to the country. She was given one set by Bahrain’s king and a second set by the country’s prime minister, Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa. Her husband, the earl, received a pen and a watch. Critics said the countess should sell the gems and give the proceeds to political protesters in Bahrain. Denis MacShane, a former Foreign Office minister, said: “Given the appalling suffering and repression of the Bahraini people, it would be a fitting gesture for the Countess of Wessex to auction these trinkets and distribute the proceeds to the victims of the regime.”……….”

Whichever
way one looks at it, these gifts (jewelry and watches) are stained with the blood of the Bahraini people. They are also stained with the sweat and tears of the people of Bahrain. Taken, stolen by the ruling al-Khalifa clan of Apartheid to give to their Western friends and protectors. They rightfully belong to the people, as do all the expropriated public properties on my Gulf, from Manama through Abu Dhabi to Riyadh, and beyond.

ANHRI: Saudi Religious Police Celebrate New Year’s, Santa Claus at Large…….

Rattlesnake Ridge   Follow ArabiaDeserta on Twitter

      BFF

ANHRI condemns the ongoing severe deterioration of freedoms in Saudi Arabia, as well as the arbitrary detentions of citizens and expatriates. Most recently, the Saudi Morality Police detained an expatriate in Riyadh in the New Year’s Eve as he was walking on a street holding balloons on which it was written “happy new year 2012″. It is forbidden to celebrate this holiday in Saudi Arabia, and thus the Morality Police arrested him and handed him over to the competent authorities for investigation. The balloons have been seized. Severe restraints are imposed on freedoms in Saudi Arabia, as international organizations say that the authorities continue to detain dozens of people without a charge or trial. Torture and other forms of ill-treatment while in custody are widespread. Non-Muslims are still not allowed to practice their rituals publicly. Shiites are continuously suffering from discrimination. Expatriate workers and their families are deprived of their most basic rights. “Saudi Arabia is on top of the list of countries hostile to freedoms which use repression in the name of religion. The policy Saudi Arabia pursues is nothing but a desperate apparatus that will not work out, the same way it did not with other despotic regimes in the Arab world when the winds of change and freedom crossed over them. Unfortunately, Saudi Arabia apparently has not learned the lesson” said ANHRI……………

You’d think New Year’s or Christmas are Shi’a (Shiite) religious holidays, the way the Wahhabi Salafi religious police crack down on them. Yet these are the main holidays of the allies of the Saudi princes, the ones with whom they share such cherished (at least by me if not by the current U.S. Congress) American values as freedom and justice and equality. I suspect if
Prince Whatishisface were not a Wahhabi Muslim, he’d be given a standing
ovation in the U.S. Congress for sharing American values. I mean after a
hustler and serial bull-shitter like Bibi Netanyahu was granted the
honor last year, who is left?

That is not all: the baboons have also regularly raided private homes where “the wrong” people celebrate these occasions privately. “Wrong people” means people of little or no means and influence in the Kingdom without Magic (you can get beheaded for having anything to do with magic or maybe even Disney). Yet the religious cops of the Commission for the Propagation of Vice (affectionately called the Haia by the princes) turn a blind eye to “not-so-private” parties by the potentates where alcohol flows like water does outside the Arabian Peninsula, where alcohol is not the only thing flowing freely.

In December, the country’s top Muslim cleric and mufti Shaikh Abdel-Aziz bin Abdullah Al Al Shaikh, aka Al, fatwad that all celebrations of the New Year, birthdays and marriage anniversary are un-Islamic (aka un-Wahhabi). He did not, however, fatwa against observing the King.s anniversary.

Kim Jong Al Saud of Arabia: HRH Abdulaziz Bin Fahd: Father’s Favorite, Mother’s Cutest, Yacht in Barcelona……

Abdelaziz Bin Fahd al-Saud, son of the late King Fahd, reportedly is starting a new television network dedicated to taking the sectarian message to an even lower level. He is reported to be chief of Alarabiya Network that is owned by his uncle. He has recently tweeted that he owns the Wesal television network and that he will start a Persian channel dedicated to exposing the Shi’as (Shi’ites), wtf that may mean. His most royal highness has a website where he claims:

HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahad AlSaud is the youngest and favorite son of King Fahd and Princess Jawhara bint Ibrahim Al Ibrahim. HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Fahd graduated in Administrative Sciences, from King Saud University; he was appointed as a Secretary of the Council of Ministers in January 2000…….. The body was carried by King Fahd’s son, Prince Abdul Aziz bin Fahd, to the mosque and to the Al-Oud…..…..

As you can see His Highness is humble. His Facebook wall carries messages like these:

“Hrh Prince Abdulaziz Bin Fahad Al-Saud: Prince of hearts … the great HrH Prince Abdulaziz Bin Fahad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud”

“Margaret Karugo (Kenya) we love you HRH…..”

He is reported about often in European media, such as this:

Abdulaziz bin Fahad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a prince from Saudi Arabia, is currently visiting Barcelona. He has come with an enormous yacht and he has also rented a cinema. I just hope he likes Barcelona. Who knows, maybe La Pedrera by Gaudí looks gorgeous to him and the Arabian real family wants to buy it. I would prefer this masterpiece of gaudí to remain in the hands of institutions more related to Barcelona but I am afraid that now in the eurozone there are a lot of things that cannot be chosen. The banks of the eurozone need money. Saudi Arabia has money. A prince of Saudi Arabia visits Barcelona. CatalunyaCaixa needs to be bought. This bank is the owner of a Gaudí building. Maybe I am not to far of what may happen in the future: that Saudi Arabia or Qatar buy La Pedrera…………..”

Way to go your highness. They love y

Arab Monarchies and Illusory Legitimacy: Oil and Opium, Mars or Uranus………

Rattlesnake Ridge   Follow ArabiaDeserta on Twitter

      BFF

In many of the region’s monarchies, while the king maintains ultimate control, power is more diffuse and thus the top leaders are able to deflect some criticism. Monarchies have so far proven to have greater legitimacy in the eyes of their countrymen than have the faux-republics. That doesn’t mean that they are immune to unrest, as we have seen in Jordan and Bahrain, the latter though is anomalous in that a Sunni minority rules over a Shiite majority. But they are better positioned to manage it. Saudi Arabia’s unique status as the “custodian of the two holy places,” Mecca and Medina, also confers legitimacy on the kingdom’s rulers. As the birthplace of Islam, and with an official religious establishment recognized well beyond the country’s borders, the Arabian kingdom ultimately exercises authority through religion and through the ruling family’s alliance with the Wahabi clerical establishment. But the Saudis are not taking any chances, and throughout the region’s uprisings, the royal family has employed a combination of sticks and carrots to help ensure domestic tranquility. Saudi troops have been deployed in force to deter any possible unrest. Thus far, any domestic turbulence has been contained to the Shia areas of Saudi Arabia, far from the majority Sunni population areas……….”

Actually being in control of the Mecca and Madinah in Hijaz does not necessarily bestow any ‘legitimacy’ on any ruling clan. It is an illusion and propaganda being perpetrated by Saudi media and their friends. They conquered the Hijaz during the 20th century from the Hashemites, the traditional custodians who roots are in Hijaz. More recently, they decided to give their kings the title of “Servant of the Two Holy Shrines” for propaganda purposes. They get the legitimacy from their tribal connections (bribes and intermarriages) as well as the ruthless repression of dissent.

Many leaders and politicians and ‘opinion-makers’ show respect and deference to the princes, but only because they control huge petroleum resources and huge amounts of money that belong to the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the money, stupid. They may respect the old king, but they know better with the rest of the princely brood. Let me put it this way: if Saudi Arabia had the resources of, say, Afghanistan, then the U.S. and French presidents would treat the king just as they treat Hamid Karzai. Unless they liked to smoke opium.

In general most Muslims and Arabs know how corrupt and avaricious and rapacious they are. Many of their subjects feel the same way, but are afraid to express it. I can be wrong: it is possible that they are almost as popular as the rulers of Bahrain are with a majority of their people. You know how much popularity that means, unless you’ve been living on Mars or the Jovian planet of Uranus throughout this year.

Breathtaking Hypocrisy: the UN and Human Rights Violations, the Prince and Kardashian……….

Of the 47 members in the Geneva-based Council, 37 countries voted on Friday for a resolution “strongly condemning the continued widespread, systematic and gross violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms by the Syrian authorities”. Six countries abstained, while four countries- Russia, Cuba, Ecuador and China- voted against the resolution. The text called for the “main bodies” of the UN to consider a UN report, published on Monday, which found that crimes of humanity had been committed and “take appropriate action”. It also established the new post of a special human rights investigator on Syria………

I know the Syrian regime is repressive and that its security forces have killed many of its people. It deserves a UN human rights investigator. I know that the Iranian regime is repressive although it does not kill its own people as often as Syria. In fact, the repressive Iranian regime does not kill as many Iranians as the Western powers and Israelis do when they kill scientists and blow up installations inside Iran. If these acts occurred anywhere else the same Western powers would consider these incidents terrorist acts and call the UN Security Council to do something, and it would..
I also know that other Middle East regimes, not all but most of them, daily violate human rights, be it of their own citizens or of foreign laborers. I also know that most Middle East countries, especially Arab regime, expropriate, steal, embezzle, and mismanage the public wealth of their countries. They are veritable kleptocracies.
There have been credible reports that the late Saudi crown prince, Sultan bin Abdulaziz, left a personal fortune of over US$ 250 Billion (yep, with a capital . He didn’t exactly get that wealth by starting and re-inventing Apple or Microsoft. Nor was he a Warren Buffett. Nor was he an international celebrity like Kim Kardashian or Newt Gingrich.
Syria and Iran deserve investigation by international human rights groups, preferably non-government groups, unlike the UN which is a totally government group. Then they would appoint only one or two or three HR investigators for the whole Middle East, including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, UAE……… et al.
Remember: Libya under Qaddafi was admitted to the UN Hman Rights Council.

Russia’s Wars and Deficits, Chinese Awards, Arab Woody Allen Awards, Prince Yin bin Yang……….

Interesting that the Chinese decided to give Russia’s Putin a peace prize. I suppose because his country has not been engaged in any foreign war for decades. The Russians have had no Iraq, no Afghanistan, no Yemen, no Pakistan, no possible Iran, no nothing: I wonder how the Russian budget deficit is faring.
In our region of the Middle East the potentates give each other prizes all the time. Prince X bin Y awards Prince Z bin W the award for the most wedded. Prince S bin OB awards shaikh B bin S the award for humanitarian thinking (not doing). Prince Yin bin Yang awards Prince Yang bin Yin the Prince Yin bin Yang bin Ying award for just “showing up”. You can call them Woody Allen awards: remember what he said about “showing up is 80% of life”?. After the ceremony they all leave by driving up the Prince Yang bin Yin bin Yang Al Yong Avenue.
In the new township named after Prince Polygamous bin Greed bin Bribe bin Nepotism. Mutual incestuous awarding of prizes.
Now about that hybrid rice…………

Bahrain Sports: Mixing Soccer, Football, and Torture…………..

A few days ago, ESPN looked at calls for political change in Bahrain through the lens of sport, and it’s not a pretty picture (I’ve embedded the video below). The story of Alaa and Mohammed Hubail, former stars of Bahrain’s national football team now living in exile, reminded me of Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, where athletes lived in constant fear of Saddam and his sons. Iraq, like Bahrain, has a Shiite majority. And, like Bahrain, Saddam’s Iraq was ruled by a Sunni leader who blithely ignored the wishes of the majority of his population. Such situations corrupt everything. In Iraq, national players were tortured and jailed for poor performances. Many promising Shiite players never got a chance at the national team because of their fate. Now, in a smaller way, Bahrain is emulating Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Alaa and Mohammed Hubail, brothers and national-team stars, are now living in the shadows, kicked off the national team and humiliated. After being arrested and, according to them, beaten in a Bahraini government detention center, they were also fired from the professional clubs. Why? They joined a democracy protest last February. Like most Bahrainis, they are Shiites, and were angry at the monarchy. Alaa is probably the country’s greatest-ever player, with 21 goals for his country. Of his detention, he told ESPN: “We were living in a nightmare of fear and horror.“………

No comment this time, but I reserve the right for a rain check. Meanwhile, here is the ESPN video link.

Prince Salman to “Modernize” Saudi Military, Generate more Commissions for Princes………

Newly appointed Defense Minister Prince Salman assumed office on Saturday as the country’s chief of staff disclosed plans to modernize the armed forces and strengthen its combat capabilities in the face of growing challenges and dangers. Salman thanked Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah for the new appointment. “I take this opportunity to thank the king for bestowing his confidence in me,” he said and sought the Almighty’s help to carry out his duties in the best form. Addressing top army commanders and officers, the new minister also emphasized the need to strengthen the armed forces not only to defend the Kingdom but also to defend its holy places, its valuable resources and major achievements……..

Oh oh: we all know what it means, all this talk about “modernize the armed forces and strengthen its combat capabilities “. More billions in weapons imports, which means, more important, more billions to Prince Salman and his kids. He probably figures that the last minister of defense late Prince Sultan and his sons have taken enough, reportedly to the tune of tens of billions in bribes and commissions and by “other means”. Now it is his, and his kids’, turn.

Saudi Reshuffling of Bins: Danny Kaye Gone, Custodian of the Pearly Gates…………

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, yesterday issued a royal decree appointing Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Defense, succeeding his brother Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud to the post. This came as part of a series of royal decrees issued by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz yesterday, which included the renaming of the “Minister of Defense, Aviation, and General Inspection” as the “Minister of Defense.” A second royal decree announced the appointment of Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as Governor of Riyadh Region at the rank of minister, and the appointment of Prince Mohammed Bin Saad Bin Abdulaziz as his deputy, also at the rank of minister. Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz succeeds the newly appointed Saudi Defense Minister as the Governor of Riyadh. The royal decree which announced the appointment of Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s new Defense Minister also included the announcement of the appointment of Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz as Saudi Deputy Minister of Defense at the rank of minister. A third royal decree issued yesterday announced the appointment of Prince Saud Bin Naif Bin Abdulaziz as Head of the Crown Prince’s Court and Special Adviser to the Crown Prince at the rank of minister. Whilst another royal decree announced the appointment of Prince Fahd Bin Abdullah Bin Mohammed Al Saud as Chairman of the General Commission for Civil Aviation ……………

Saudi semi-official and official media (the only two kinds available) have gone berserk over the new royal line-up (they have no choice). They started by eulogizing the late Crown Prince Sultan as if he were transferred to a new job, Custodian of the Pearly Gates, way up there. Now Prince Nayef is made to be one of the wisest, greatest, nicest, sweetest, prince that ever lived.
I was especially intrigued by this new appointment: “Prince Saud Bin Naif Bin Abdulaziz as Head of the Crown Prince’s Court and Special Adviser to the Crown Prince “.
(I felt sad about the removal of the title of “Inspector General” from the Defense Minister’s portfolio. It always amused me, evoking memories of the late Danny Kaye, although I never knew wtf he inspected).
