Qorvis of Arabia, Pigs and Lipstick, RMA Sandhurst of the Persian Gulf……………….

“One of the largest contracts the (Bahrain) regime had was with the DC-based PR firm Qorvis Communications. As Time reported last November, the firm, which also does extensive PR work for Bahrain’s close allies, the Saudi regime, “has a branch dedicated to rehabilitating the reputation of unsavory governments, a niche practice that has seen great demand in the wake of the Arab spring”. Qorvis often led the way in complaining to CNNi about its Bahrain coverage. An internal email from CNN at the beginning of 2012, seen by the Guardian, records the firm’s calling to complain about excessively favorable mentions of Nabeel Rajab, who had been arrested and charged over an anti-regime tweet, and was just this month sentenced to three years in prison for an “illegal demonstration”…………….”

So the GCC Gulf states donate money to Bahrain. The ruling clan, the al-Khalifa potentates, distribute the money this way:

  • X% to hire mercenaries from Pakistan and Jordan and Syria and Yemen and other places to crackdown on their people, raid their homes, and torture them.
  • Y% to hire expensive PR firms and lobbyists in London and Washington and other places to try and polish the image of the ruling al-Khalifa clan. They also influence the Western media, as the case of Amber Lyon and CNN shows.
  • Except that “a pig with lipstick is still a pig’: it also looks like and it especially smells like a pig. Even in Bahrain.
  • Z% to import specialists and weapons from the West and Turkey and Jordan to be used for “crowd control”. Turkey and Jordan are used as fig leaf for Western powers.
  • W% for the purchase of palaces and properties in Europe, Britain being the favorite destination of Bahrain kleptocrats.
  • U% to donate to Sandhurst Academy (RMAS: The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey, UK) in order to continue graduating the sons of the ruling clan, reportedly at an easier-than-normal special curriculum for the scions of Gulf and Arab potentates.

Not a bad racket, by these Bin Technocrat Bin Kleptocrat shaikhs and potentates, recycling Gulf petro-money around the world, far away from their rebellious protesting captive people.

Muslim Summit in Mecca to Discuss Syria and Bahrain?………

                          Neck of the woods
“Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast has said that if an extraordinary summit of Muslim leaders is supposed to be held in Mecca, the crisis in Bahrain should be top of the agenda. Mehmanparast made the remarks during his regular press briefing in Tehran on Tuesday in response to a question about the fact that Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal said on Sunday that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia had called for an emergency Islamic summit in Mecca on August 14 and 15 to address risks of “sedition” threatening Muslim countries. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman stated, “We will welcome any meeting that brings together Muslim countries and will actively participate in it. But the crises are obvious, and it is also clear which countries are taking interventionist measures. If such a meeting is supposed to be held, resolving Bahrain’s crisis” should be top of the agenda…………”

If the summit covers the Syrian civil war, then the Iranians are right in requesting that it should also cover the uprising in Bahrain. I wholeheartedly agree with that. It seems only fair: one Arab uprising is equal to another Arab uprising. By “risks of ‘sedition’ threatening Muslim countries”, I take it the Saudis mean the Arab uprisings and their aftermath. They cannot mean the Western and Israeli military threats against another Muslin country, the threats of another war in our region since they are very likely pushing that (Wikileaks and ‘cutting the head of the snake’ and all that). I suspect the Saudi princes calculate that they have more friends among leaders of Muslim countries than the Iranian mullahs have (they have more money and influential Western friends). They may calculate that they can get a more favorable response.
It is also possible the Saudi princes decided to call this meeting to show that they are still active, in spite of the death of two crown princes and the ailing king Abdullah. Except the King looks near the end of his life, literally, his new crown prince is rumored to be a little slow upstairs, and the foreign minister is ailing. They need to inject new blood (al-Saud blood of course) into their regime quickly, not an easy job.
How about recruiting Shaikh Nimr al-Nimr in the cabinet?

New Target for Popular Anger in Bahrain ………

“For months, the protests have aimed at the ruling monarchy, but recently they have focused on a new target. To their familiar slogans — demanding freedoms, praising God and cursing the ruling family — the young protesters added a new demand, written on a placard in English, so the Americans might see: “U.S.A. Stop arming the killers.” Thousands of Bahrainis rose up 16 months ago, demanding political liberties, social equality and an end to corruption. But the Sunni monarchy, seen by the United States and Saudi Arabia as a strategic ally and as a bulwark against Iran, was never left to face the rage on its own. More than a thousand Saudi troops helped put down the uprising and remain in Bahrain, making it a virtual protectorate. The United States, a sometimes critical but ultimately unshakable friend, has called for political reform but strengthened its support for the government. Last month, the Obama administration resumed arms sales here…………”

It was bound to happen, as I opined a few weeks ago. Unfortunately it is a logical reaction to the hypocrisy of the Obama administration and its State Department that has a very selective policy about popular uprisings. (In fairness: actually all nations have selective hypocritical policies toward popular uprisings, not just the USA. That includes Saudi Arabia and Iran ).

The President and Crown Prince reaffirmed their commitment to strong bilateral defense cooperation to enhance regional security and deter any threat of aggression against the UAE. …….…”

Now
wtf would attack the UAE? The Martians? Klingons? Foreign Laborers? Saudi Arabia has had territorial and other disputes with the UAE, still does have border issues. I expect their foreign mercenary force would be enough to beat back any Saudi invasion: even the ragtag Huthi clan of Yemen defeated them a couple of years ago. As for Iran: highly unlikely since they have already got the disputed islands (they claim they’ve regained them) and they would face the mighty U.S. Fifth Fleet right next door in occupied oppressed new Saudi province of Bahrain.

Bahrain regime mercenary forces severely beat some leaders of al-Wefaq opposition group today during a march. They also beat up a lot of other people, but that is something they have been doing every day for the past year and a half. So Ali Salman the leader of al-Wefaq tweets asking God to forgive them, saying that “forgive them Lord, for they know not what they are doing”. Typical al-Wefaq thing. They certainly know, the regime, what they are doing. If it was me, I’d say “Lord, kick their corrupt fat royal asses and smite them and their Goddamned foreign mercenaries….

“Shaikh Khalid hails HM the King’s continued support. First Deputy of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Horseracing Federation Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa today affirmed that he is a graduate of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa‘s school in the sport of horse riding. Shaikh Khalid highlighted the fact that His Majesty the King was primary motivator for him and Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa in the sport of horse riding that is an extension to the forefather’s heritage and tradition……….. Moreover, he also spoke about the importance of the GCC countries as he considers them family and friends………..”

He is
a son of the shaikh king of Bahrain. He is a deputy to his brother Shaikh Nasser who is the Gauleiter of all sports in Bahrain: sort of like Uday Saddam Hussein used to be in Iraq. So these potentates big and small are busy hailing each other. He says he follows in his father’s footsteps as far as horses are concerned.
Speaking of horses: the whole clan has been dishing out horse apples, they are very good at it even if very few believe them. It is the thought that counts. Quite moving, actually, if it weren’t for the many thousands of their victims who are in prison, in hospital, in the grave, or out of jobs. Hail away, your highnesses. The problem with horse apples is that you can’t get rid of the odor (although some may consider that an aroma rather than an odor).

Lt. General Bin Technocrat

“The Minister of Interior and Chairman of the board of trustees of the Royal Police Academy council Lt. General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa today chaired the ninth meeting. During the meeting the educational and training programmes provided by the academy were reviewed………..”

This Lt. General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Bin Technocrat Al Khalifa is a mean mother, no doubt (just look at his visage up there, and that photo was taken on a good day). He is in charge of police, security, foreign mercenaries, village and home raids, arrests, torture, imprisonment, sexual assaults, killings, and other such traits and values that the Western world (especially David Cameron and William J Hague) cherish so dearly. IN summary: he is in charge of enforcing the policies that would keep Apartheid in Bahrain in place. He ain’t a Field Marshal yet, that honors is still confined to the commander of the Bahrain military, another Al-Khalifa chap, but as nasty as this one.
If there was justice in this world, both these gentlemen ought to be put immediately under arrest by Interpol as soon as they leave their captive island.
I don’t know about you, but I think all this shit is considered really cooooool among certain elements in our neck of the wood

But how come the prime minister Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Bin Technocrat Al-Khalifa didn’t congratulate his grandnephew? Was it because he himself flunked out of college some 60 years ago? Or was it because he chose to listen to Timothy Leary and “Turn on, tune in, drop out” some sixty years ago?
I shall categorize this under WTF- Bahrain Branch.

“Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed (Bin Technocrat) al-Nahayan, Head of State, congratulated Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed (Bin Technocrat) al-Nahayan on the occasion of the victory of Manchester City Club in the English Premier League. His highness also congratulated all managers of the team and the technical staff as well as the players as the players………….

Wow! Verstehen?

I can’t think of anything else the people of the UAE, the 15% of them who are native citizens and the 85% them who are foreign laborers and housemaids, needed to boost their morale better than this. They didn’t even need all their bought JDAM Bunker Busters or high-tech fighter
jets or their Blackwater-led foreign mercenary brigade from Colombia and Australia and other faraway places to achieve it.

Now

I imagine the GCC summit  in Riyadh tomorrow will take time to congratulate Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Bin Technocrat al-Nahayan, on this victory. That will come after they congratulate the current king (former shaikh and future satrap or wali) of Bahrain on giving his countgry to the al-Saud princes without the consent of most of his people.

GCC Summit: a Salafi Tribal Dream Team, Taqiyya and a Real Existential Threat……

    Follow ArabiaDeserta on Twitter

“Some in the al Khalifa elite appear to be willing to be subsumed into such a union and this is a startling reflection of their heightened concerns. Given the lack of oil and gas resources in Bahrain, the exodus of European banks seriously damaging confidence in this key industry, the profound socio-economic problems that lie mostly unacknowledged at the root of Bahrain’s political troubles, and the hardening political crisis, there are concerns as to Bahrain’s longer term viability as an independent economic entity. Saudi Arabia already gives Bahrain’s elite huge subsidies and support and there is no sign that this could be reversed soon. From the al Khalifa perspective, therefore, if those in Riyadh are not willing to simply continue the economic support without deeper political concessions, with no end in sight to the political and economic crisis, securing guaranteed long-term backing from Riyadh to maintain the status quo may seem sensible. Overall, while Saudi Arabia taking on Bahrain as a loss-making, politically unstable appendage with a majority Shiite population may seem to be unattractive, it is preferable to the alternative. They could conversely see the slow implosion of a fellow Sunni monarchy and the potential ascendance to power of the Shiites next door to Saudi’s Eastern province, which contains not only a majority-Shiite Saudi population but also most of the kingdom’s oil fields and facilities……….”

The Gulf GCC leaders are scheduled to meet in Riyadh next week. The Saudis and their supporters are trying to market the half-baked idea of a GCC “confederation”. They have been at it for months, ever since the al-Saud realized that inviting Jordan and Morocco into the GCC was a stupid idea (from their point of view not mine: I knew it won’t get anywhere). Morocco and Jordan have been toying with more democracy, something the Saudi princes could not allow (an elected government would release prisoners and pack some of the princes to prison). Saudi-paid journalists and affiliated tribes and Salafis in some Gulf states are encouraging the idea of closer ties to the Wahhabi kingdom. The Salafis especially, being advocates of the Saudi royals, are pushing for it. The pressure is being applied, but they won’t get anywhere.

In Kuwait

, for example, the Salafis claim they want more freedom from the (divided) ruling family, but that is a phoney argument, a Salafi-tribal taqiyya or deception. The Salafis and local Muslim Brothers and their tribal supporters, now a majority in the assembly, are advocating for the Saudi regime, the most repressive Arab regime in modern times. It is an oddity of the Gulf Salafis that they admire both the al-Saud princes and they admire the al-Qaeda terrorists. Their Dream Team would be to rejoin the two Wahhabi sides (al-Saud and al-Qaeda) and live happily ever-after. But Kuwait still has some sort of civil society and the people, most of them (at least the city folks) will not accept getting too close to their former Wahhabi invaders. The only invasions of Kuwait in modern times have come from Saudi Arabia and from Iraq (both in the 20th century). People don’t forget where they were invaded from.

Bahrain

was a shaikhdom not long ago. It became a kingdom a little over a decade ago. Now it is a full-fledged state of rebellion, has been so for some time. The rulers of Bahrain have tricked the people several times: at independence when they voted for a “constitutional” monarchy, then again over a decade ago when they voted again for a weaker version of the same system. The rulers are trying to do the same again, promise reform while they tighten the screws some more. In Bahrain, the al-Khalifa and their small core of supporters would do anything to keep the old corrupt prime minister in power and to keep their ill-gotten privileges, even at the cost of handing the once-progressive island to the repressive Wahhabi princes.

The Qataris

have been bitten before by their “current” Saudi allies. There was a Saudi coup attempt against the current Shaikh of Qatar in 1998. It failed, but several high-ranking Saudi intelligence officers spent ten years in a Qatari prison and some border-straddling tribes were implicated.

Oman

is suspicious of Wahhabi ideology which does not look kindly on the religion of most of its people. Besides, the Omanis have always preferred to face the sea (Gulf of Oman, Indian Ocean, Persian Gulf, Arabian Sea): less trouble from those directions in recent years.

The UAE has had border disputes with the Saudis since the days before independence from Britain (before there was a UAE). The al-Nahayan are highly unlikely to hand over any iota of their independence to the “sisterly” neighbors they have never fully trusted. The UAE has a dispute with the Iranians over Abu Musa and Tunb in the Gulf, but the real “existential” danger to all the smaller Gulf GCC states does not come from across the Gulf, not from beyond the Western fleets, it comes from across the land border. The rulers realize his, as do most of the people.

In the end

, they will all pay lip service to the idea of an “eventual” move to closer cooperation or coordination or whatever. With all the usual committees, commissions, councils, etc. My guess is they will form a body or a council for foreign policy that will be meaningless, an advisory council to the existing council of foreign ministers.
