"The EU sanction against the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) is completely futile and serves as part of the West's psychological war on Tehran since the CBI has no financial assets in the European countries, an informed source said on Monday. One of the sanctions announced recently was blocking the Central Bank's assets in the European countries, while the CBI does not have even one single Rial (Iran's currency unit) in Europe," the source said. He described the embargo as a tool used by the West to wage psychological war on Iran. The United States imposed additional sanctions against Iran's financial sector in late December. US President Barack Obama authorized a law on New Year's Eve imposing fresh sanctions on financial institutions that deal with the Central Bank of Iran, Tehran's main clearing house for oil payments. The US has also persuaded the European countries to impose the same embargos against the CBI…………….” Fars News Agency

Obviously this official Iranian claim is nearly nonsensical, like some of the other ones they occasionally make. It is almost outrageous unrealistic boasting. It may be partly true for the short term, but that may be because the CBI sanctions will fully take effect over time. To say that a boycott of the central bank does no harm is just not logical. Regime officials must live on a different planet; usually regime officials in countries under siege or blockade do live on a higher planet, are hardly touched by hardships around them. No doubt the Iranian people feel the pinch, and will feel more of it. You can’t fool people about facts on the ground; so why not openly face it?
