The GCC Way to Spell Nuclear Hypocrisy: Puppets on a String?….……….
Rattlesnake Ridge
BFF January 2012: “Gulf oil producers have created a rapid deployment team to face repercussions of a possible accident at Iran’s Busehr nuclear plant which is located just across the Gulf water, a Saudi newspaper said on Sunday. The six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, sitting atop over 40 per cent of the world’s proven oil deposits, have also set up specialized joint committees to study the effects of any radiation from the plant following its official inauguration in September last year, Aleqtisadia Arabic language daily said, quoting Tariq Al Obaid, secretary general of the Geneva-based Euro-Arab Environment Organization (EAEO). The paper, cited an official GCC report, also said the UAE and nearby states could be the first victims of any nuclear radiation from the Iranian plant………..” Emieatse 24
December 2009: ”The Abu Dhabi Government has chosen a group of South Korean firms to build the country's first nuclear power stations, advancing the UAE's goal to become the first Arab nation to harness atomic energy on a commercial scale. The US$20 billion (Dh73.47bn) award for four power stations to be built by 2020 will supply up to a quarter of the emirate's energy in 10 years and will drastically cut the country's carbon footprint. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed, the President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi…….” The National (UAE)
January 2012: “BAHRAIN OUTLINES INITIAL PREPARATIONS FOR NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAM….......” The Telegraph
So how do we spell h-y-p-o-c-r-i-s-y in the GCC? نفاق
I have misgivings about nuclear energy. It can be disastrous, be it Iranian, Israeli, Japanese, Arab or American. The Gulf GCC states have already signed initial deals for nuclear plants of their own. At least the UAE has done so, even repressive little Bahrain is dabbling in nuclear power (mercenary, of course), and I believe one or two others have established some type of ‘nuclear’ body, WTF that may mean.
Suddenly the potentates and their controlled media are expressing concern about the Bushehr plant. It is a legitimate concern, in view of the Japanese disaster: all Gulf countries should worry. Yet why then start their own, closer to home? And what took so long until now that political tensions are high in the region? Is the timing accidental? And how come the Israeli arsenal of warheads, across the borders of Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, and Lebanon are of no concern to the Saudi princes who control the GCC?
And WTF can a ”rapid deployment” team do after the fact? And what is it supposed to deploy besides the usual hot gas?
Cheers
