“An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed Wednesday morning when a bomb ripped through his car in a northern Tehran neighborhood, Iranian media reports said. It was the fifth attack targeting an Iranian nuclear scientist in two years and will likely add to the tension between Iran and the West over the Islamic Republic's contested nuclear enrichment program. The head of Tehran's Security Council, Safarali Baratlu, blamed the attack on Israel, calling it "an act of the Zionists," according to the semi-official Fars news agency. There was no immediate response from Israel. Witnesses said a motorcyclist planted a bomb under the vehicle of the 32-year-old scientist, who was identified in media reports as Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan. "This bomb was a magnetic bomb and similar to those that they have used to assassinate scientists in the past," Baratlu was quoted as saying. At least one other person was killed in the blast, and a third person was wounded, Fars said. Roshan was a professor at Sanati Sharif University…………….”

Another science professor is gunned down, blown up, or kidnapped. If a professor, a scientist, was assassinated in the West, on the streets of Chicago or London or Tel Aviv, they’d be sending more warships to the Persian-American Gulf. It would be called an act of terrorism to kill a civilian professor at Cal-Tech or Carnegie-Mellon or Berkeley. A husband, a son, a father. They’d be interviewing his appropriately dressed-up and made-up widow, and children, on CNN and Fox News. Another judge in New York would pass a ’judgment’ in absentia. Hot gas would be permeating the halls of Congress: casus belli!
Bibi Netanyahu would give his standard well-rehearsed monotonous insincere sermon on the mount of television, easily switching to Eastern Mediterranean American-ese. The American right-wing, and much of the left wing, would go nearly orgasmic over his canned (or is it TV Dinner) pearls of wisdom: an embarrassing thing when one has to do so many standing ovations at the same time.
But I’ve got to admit: all this beats a real shooting war, a disastrous war of the kind we might get next year, or possibly later this year. Depending on the electoral landscape, on how the good people of Ohio and Florida and Iowa and Colorado and Nevada and Pennsylvania are perceived to lean before November.
