2011: Year of an Unforgivable Sectarian Crime……….

Saudi Arabia’s ruling dynasty chose to fight the Arab Spring by aiming under the belt. The world’s supreme counter-revolutionary regime, more counter-revolutionary than even the Obama administration, chose to fight the spread of Arab uprisings in the dirtiest way possible. It deployed all its vast media resources, dominant in the Arab world and the Middle East, to spread hatred of the others. It has been spreading divisiveness up and down the shores of my Gulf, pitting neighbors against each other, sowing suspicion and discord. It has deployed its Salafi fifth columns on the Gulf and in other places like Egypt to spread the hatred of the others. It resorted to the usual charges of blaming foreign infiltrators for peoples’ uprisings from Egypt to Bahrain and to Saudi Arabia itself. It even managed to sell the idea to some willing Western media types. Explosive sectarian provocation has been the Saudi weapon of choice, one of the most potent weapons this past year. But they also have had other weapons: money and the use of terror and force (in Saudi Arabia and in Bahrain).
Yet nothing will have as lasting an effect as the message of sectarian hatred being spread by the semiofficial Saudi media and by their Salafi agents. An unforgivable crime that harms the fabrics of many Arab societies..
