The Dog, the Cow, the Ass, and Arab Leaders……….
Rattlesnake Ridge
They say a dog, a cow, and an ass (donkey) met at a barn and decided to run away together. They agreed that their town had gone to seed. The three escaped to the mountains, where life was free but somewhat hard. One night they sat around the fire in a mountain valley and traded their impressions about their town and why they escaped.
The dog started by saying: ”One morning I woke up early and stepped out the door to a shocking sign. All over town there were large signs of ‘No Barking’. Dogs were not allowed to bark anymore. Now how can a dog live without barking? I decided to run away.”
The cow said: “Things got so bad in town that I did not feel safe. Every time I went out people attacked me, grabbing my udders, pulling and squeezing them hard. It was so painful and humiliating that I decided to run away.”
The ass shock his head and said: “I too was shocked out of my apathy when I stepped out of the barn one morning and saw huge signs all over the town. They were insulting signs, bearing my pictures with huge writings saying ‘let this new ass become our leader’. I was never so insulted, I had no choice.....”
I have altered this story slightly. It has its origins in Eastern Europe, but it can be applied all across the Arab world.
