“The former US president claimed that the million-strong community of Jews who emigrated from former Soviet states after the collapse of Communism was generally more opposed to the creation of a Palestinian state than other Israelis. Portraying Russian youngsters as one of "the hardest core" groups against the division of the Holy Land, Mr Clinton said: "This presents a staggering problem. It's a different Israel. Sixteen per cent of Israelis speak Russian. They've just got here," he told reporters in New York…… Mr Clinton's comments were condemned by many in Israel, among them Benjamin Netanyahu, the country's prime minister……”

U.S. presidents almost always see the light about the Middle East, after they leave office. Or maybe they are free to talk. Only thinking U.S. presidents, which is why Reagan and Bush (jr) never revisited the region. The most famous was Jimmy Carter’s epiphany, and now Clinton’s. Hillary will surely express similar sentiments after leaving her “last office”. Israel sure is different, as Clinton said, it is a Russkie Tea Party country, at least the West Bank settlements are.

Imagine all the good US politicians can do the Middle East, especially Israel, and U.S interests if they say what they really think about the region BEFORE they leave office. But then they wouldn’t last in office long.
