“MANAMA: Bahrain plays a major role in bridging the gap between different sects and religions in the country, said a top US imam last night. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf is at the centre of controversy over a proposed mosque near the Ground Zero site in New York. He arrived in Bahrain on Thursday night, where he is on a US government-sponsored 15-day trip to Bahrain, the UAE and Qatar during Ramadan. "It is prevalent for Americans to understand more about Bahrain and the role it plays," said Imam Abdul Rauf. "Most Americans don't realise that Bahrain's ambassador to the US is a woman of Jewish descent or that the country has a major US military base here.
