“Israel is tied with Canada, Switzerland, and Australia as the world's eighth happiest country out of 155 surveyed, according to a Gallup World Poll posted by Forbes Thursday. Forbes said the richest countries were by and large the happiest. Scandinavian countries dominated the list, with Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands taking all top five spots. African nations took up most of the bottom, with Sierra Leone, Cambodia (not African), Comoros, Buriundi, and Togo ranking as the unhappiest countries on earth. Israel far outstripped its neighbors in happiness, with Jordan ranking 52, Lebanon 73, Egypt and Syria 115. The Palestinian Territories were 88 on the list. The US ranked number 14 on the list, ahead of Britain, 17. Iran came in at the middle, with 81. War-torn Iraq ranked 110, and Afghanistan 115………”

Jerusalem Post, probably rightfully gloating over the fact that a Gallup Poll found Israelis to be the 8th happiest people in the world. The closest Arab country (UAE) came at number 20 (but that probably doesn’t include the overwhelming majority of its population who are expatriate laborers and very likely disgruntled), while Egypt and Syria both tied with Afghanistan, after Iraq and the Palestinian Territories (number 88). Saudi Arabia was 58, just ahead of Pakistan. The happiest, as usual, were the Nordic countries and Costa Rica. As expected, the least happy fifteen countries were all African with one exception.
The USA is number 14, after Panama and Brazil! For all its worth, which probably is not much.
At least the Israeli media has not reacted in an Arab way to all this: it has not claimed that this high happiness (or is it a happy high?) was the fruit of their wise and sage (and verbally flatulent) leadership.

Cheers
