A Foolish Gulf Poem in Praise of Saddam Hussein, my Anger Management……………

Yesterday I came again across this rather long poem: I hadn’t seen it in some years. It is titled "A Poem of Love to an Iraqi Sword”. It is by a foolish Gulf elite poet praising the “Iraqi soldier” and a thinly-veiled Saddam. That was in the good old days of the 1980s, the blind days of the 1980s. But then that was about the time when he was also a hero to the Reagan administration and the French administration, and maybe to others who armed him to the teeth and enabled his WMD program, and to the few foolish Gulf poets and journalists who turned a blind eye to his genocide and use of banned weapons.

Reading
it made me angry, very angry, and not just at the silly poet who wrote that drivel. My anger was mostly at the fools who controlled what we could say and what we could write at the time.

Cheers
