Married but frustrated Saudi student in the West:  I am a married Saudi student in the Western country, but I am suffering from the temptations of the semi-nude girls around the university campus. My question to you O sheikh is: how is the Shari’a with what is called a misfar marriage (temporary travel marriage)? Is it the same as the ‘mut’a’ marriage? I must tell you that my wife is with me here in the West but she suffers from severe sexual coldness…….

Shaikh al-Kalbani:  These new names for marriage do not concern us. What matters is how the marriage is performed: if the wife’s guardian is approving and there are two witnesses and agreement, then the marriage is proper. Misfar is a temporary marriage with the intention of a future divorce and it is permissible in the case when one fears of committing sin. But the date of the intended future divorce must not be set ahead of time and the intention of divorce must not be made known openly…..…

Shaikh al-Kalbani , at a previous time:  The mesayar marriage (a no-obligation part-time Saudi marriage done purely for sex) is also permissible if both sides agree to its conditions………..

This shaikh, a former Imam of the Grand Mosque at Mecca, apparently does not know that he can get this (admittedly horny) student into deep trouble. He can go to prison and then be deported for polygamy in the West. Besides, what Western girl would marry him as a second temporary wife? Okay, I suppose he can resort to Craig’s List.

Cheers
