They are trying to build a case for another war.
Interesting: a Saudi royalist cleric opining to a right-wing German magazine about Israel’s limited agenda and Iran’s more dangerous global agenda.
Neoconservative opinion pieces, and “research” papers, are increasingly stressing that Arabs want a war against Iran. By “Arabs” they mean the ruling classes of Saudi Arabia and the Gulf mini-states. They are trying to build a case for another war, just as they did before the invasion of Iraq, with the US media being swept along with all this talk of a war, banging the drums of war. Most of them, like a recent piece by Saban Center’s Pollack, note that, although they do not say it, Arab oligarchs are eager for a “White Knight” to ride down on his white horse and strike at the mullahs across the Persian Gulf. They increasingly contend that it doesn’t matter to the Arab rulers if the White Knight is American or Israeli. That they just want someone, anyone, to go to war, anyone as long as it is not they.
Maybe so, although oddly the mullahs have never attacked any country since they wrested power after the Revolution of 1979. The only war involving Iran came when the Ba’athists controlling Iraq attacked across the Iranian border, eagerly and actively supported by the Arab oligarchies and the West. The most damage the mullahs have done has probably been to the Iranian economy and people.
