Heart of Tikrit and Samarra and Points West: a Graffiti Imam……
“TIKRIT: The imam of the main mosque in Saddam Hussein’s former stronghold Tikrit was arrested for spray-painting the late dictator’s name on the mosque, its original name, Iraqi police said yesterday. Imam Jumaa Issa Addahima “was arrested for writing the name of Saddam Hussein on the wall of the mosque and will be tried on Sunday,” the spokesman for police in the northern province of Salaheddin, whose capital is Tikrit. The imam, a former Iraqi soldier under Saddam, was arrested on Thursday on the street outside his home and taken to police headquarters, his family said…… But the imam rejected the new name, according to a source in his family. “This was not because he supports Saddam Hussein but because Saddam had built (the mosque), and that belongs to the history of Tikrit,” the source said. “He says the people of Tikrit must keep the memory of Saddam.”……”
Okay, at least the guy who paints graffiti is unlikely to be the same one who murders civilians in marketplaces. Maybe he is an aspiring calligrapher, an aspiring little Iraqi Hitler.
