Why UAE Women need to Dumb Down, Odd Affirmative Action on the Gulf……..

DUBAI // Emirati women are having second thoughts about studying abroad for fear that being perceived as “westernised” will damage their chances of finding a husband back home. Emirati women, men and parents who were interviewed by The National said society considered women who had studied in the West to be undignified, damaging their chances of attracting an Emirati spouse. Such perceptions, whether valid or not, tend to lead young Emiratis, as well as their parents, to question themselves and their motives carefully before going abroad for an average of four years. They feel that they may lose their culture and heritage while being educated in a foreign country. Most students at the UAE’s federal universities are women. In recent years, an increasing number – largely from Dubai and Abu Dhabi – have taken postgraduate courses in Britain and the United States…….

Okay, the women need to dumb down in order to be acceptable as spouses to the dummies in dishdasha and the head fixings. I know Persian Gulf states where local universities have much lower admission requirements for men than women: otherwise very few men would be admitted. In some cases the requirement for admission for males is the equivalent of a D average in high school. It may be the case in all of them, I am not sure. Many of the current strutting potentates and bureaucrats in some of these states could not get themselves admitted into a community college in the USA (they’d need to pass elementary reading and basic algebra for that). Okay, now they all have access to ‘online' colleges, where they get credits for just ‘being who they are’, to paraphrase Woody Allen.

The elite potentates and their retainers also have their own version of affirmative action, a perverse type with the odd but understandable goal of keeping them dominant. This affirmative action for potentates ensures that they continue to dominate public institutions in the Gulf region, but it is the same all over the Arab world. Affirmative action as well for their main plutocrat retainers, the merchant families, also ensures that they get to dominate the second tier of influence, the chief flunkies, albeit very rich and influential chief flunkies in the Gulf.
