Saudi Machiavelli, Saudi Metternich: Iranian War for Palestinian Peace…………

Editor of Saudi daily Asharq Alawsat is opining on the Palestinian issue and the Iranian nuclear issue. He is suggesting that all previous diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East were preceded by major wars. He suggests that President Obama can trade with Israel: a Palestinian state for a war with Iran. What he suggests is get Israel to give up the West Bank, Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights in exchange for a US promise to “take care” of the Iranian problem. Actually he is in more of a hurry to have a war against Iran: he suggests a promise by Netanyahu to give up the occupied territories mentioned in exchange for a war on Iran first. He is suggesting that a war may be a necessary prerequisite for peace.
Cute, and nice try. If the Saudis are so anxious for a war on Iran, why don’t they wage it? They are armed to the teeth: in fact they are much better armed than the Iranians, with the latest Western machines of war at their disposal. They are among the biggest importers of arms, and they certainly spend a much larger portion of their GDP on weapons imports than Iran. Would Netanyahu and his coalition give up East Jerusalem and the Golan and the West Bank settlements as per the feel-good peace initiative of one Thomas Friedman? He would not, even if he wanted to, which he probably does not.
