GCC Human "Rights" on the Gulf: Aping Europe on Wine and Topless Beaches………

The foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council have recommended the establishment of a human rights commission. The panel will highlight the steps taken by the GCC states to improve the human rights situation of Gulf citizens in line with Arab and Islamic values, the ministers said at the end of a one-day meeting held here. Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have often complained that reports issued by international organisations often tend to undervalue or ignore their achievements on the issue…..

Oh boy.
Normally Arab states mostly coordinate their policies repression and control: that is why I am extremely suspicious about this.
Sometimes, uniting means accepting the least (worst) common denominator. And there are at least two pretty bad human rights common denominators among the GCC states.

I thought that  perhaps they were just aping the EU in everything. That seems to be their trend for the past few years. Whatever common body or commission the Europeans establish, the not-very-original GCC bureaucracy quickly proposes a similar one for the Persian Gulf states.  But this one seems more like a brain-washing commission for the GCC. This one seems more sinister, they want to be able to control their own Human Rights report instead of accept UN, Amnesty, or HRW reports ".....complained thatreports issued by international organisations often tend to undervalue or ignore their achievements..."

Speaking of aping the EU, I wonder if the European Union has special commissions for wines and topless beaches. They probably have one, a commission, for the former.

Cheers
