The United States on Saturday warned Turkey that it was alienating U.S. supporters and needed to demonstrate its commitment to partnership with the West. The remarks, made by Philip Gordon, the Obama administration's top diplomat on European affairs, were a rare admonishment of a crucial NATO ally. Turkey’s relations with the West have been mostly one-sided, usually to the advantage of the West. After over sixty years of being a loyal member of NATO, after being repeatedly denied admission into the European Union even while former Warsaw Pact members are welcomed in, after having the US Congress vote a belated 100-year late purely political resolution on Armenian Genocide, now the US is publicly lambasting Turkey. The WEst wants the Turks to prove commitment! Odd that it should happen around the time that the Israelis are extremely angry at Turkey for their own reasons.
All this sends another message across the Middle East that it is the Israeli tail that wags the American dog, especially in a tough election year. It is the Turks bad luck that they have fewer American constituents than the Greeks, Armenians, or Israelis.
