Claims and counterclaims in Iraq. Ayad Allawi claims that he was “reassured” by officials of Iraq’s elections commission that the recount of votes will not change the results as announced so far. An odd claim indeed. Nuri al-Maliki bloc claims they were “told” the recount will change the results of the elctions as they have been announced so far. The Iraqis will be better off ditching both these gentlemen and electioning a third person. No doubt that is what will happen, since not many Ba’athists are willing to die to insure that Allawi becomes leader. As I recall not many Ba’athists were willing to die to keep Saddam in power either in 2003; they mostly fled into hiding as their capital was assaulted, leaving Baghdad wide open to the invasion forces.
