Somali Pirates Show a Gentler Kinder Face.........

“Local pirates in Puntland, northeast of Somalia, have told Asharq Al-Awsat that they are about to launch a counter media campaign to improve their image and reputation and respond to the attempt by various international media organs to depict them as a mere handful of thieves and outlaws…… Though Andrew Mwangura, head of the Seafarers' Assistance Program who uses Mombassa in Kenya as his base for watching the pirates' activities, denied to Asharq Al-Awsat any knowledge of this meeting, he revealed in return that the pirates are leaning toward changing the military tactics used in hijacking and controlling ships. He told Asharq Al-Awsat: "I have received definite information about this………”

“Piraten machen den Schiffsverkehr im Golf von Aden gefährlich und teuer, die Männer mit den Schnellbooten sind ein schwer berechenbares Risiko und zu Gewalt bereit. Mit diesem Image unzufrieden, wollen die Piraten einem Zeitungsbericht zufolge an ihrem Bild in der Öffentlichkeit feilen. Sie kapern Handelsschiffe, erpressen Lösegeld und wollen dafür auch noch respektiert werden. Die Piraten aus Somalia planen jetzt laut einem Bericht der arabischen Zeitung „Al-Sharq Al-Awsat“ eine Imagekampagne, um etwas gegen ihren schlechten Ruf zu unternehmen. Ein Pirat sagte der Zeitung in einem Telefoninterview, in der Hafenstadt Eyl werde demnächst eine Versammlung der Seeräuber stattfinden, bei der man über Methode der Imageförderung sprechen wolle. „Die ganze Welt stellt uns als Terroristen und Bande von Verbrechern dar, aber das ist falsch, wir vertreten eine gerechte Sache“, sagte der Seeräuber…..”

What these guys need are a few good lobbyists. Once they have lobbyists in place near the Capitol in DC, they will do fine. All they need is spend some of their hard-earned loot for the good cause. Before you know it, there will be a Congressional Friends of Somali Pirates Caucus………

On the bright side, once all this pirating is over, Somalia will have an experienced nucleus of a great navy that already rules the waves near Gulf of Aden. That is something the regimes of five or six Arab countries that straddle the Red Sea would never be able to do. It seems the only waves they can rule are those in their own bathtubs.
