Egyptians wonder who will be their next president, as their leader is ailing abroad. This is the most urgent question in Egypt today, especially in view of the photos of a very thin President Mubarak with his two German doctors. Mubarak has not yet addressed his people, although he was shown talking to the doctors. The medical team did not give any timetable for the progress of his condition……. Mnay still expect Mubarak to resume his official duties, and to supervise the next elections that may carry his son to power……….” al-Quds al-Arabi

President Mubarak is probably the most irresponsible leader Egypt has had in many decades. He has stubbornly refused to have a vice president, thus leaving the fate of power transfer uncertain, and opening the door to political chaos. Gamal Abdel Nasser had at least two vice presidents; one of them was Anwar Sadat. Sadat himself had a vice president, Hosni Mubarak. There is hardly another Arab country like this. Even Hafiz al-Assad of Syria had a vice president, as did Saddam Hussein.
Most likely, the chaos Mr. Mubarak is preparing for will lead to the selection of his son as president.
Cheers
