Iraqi elections are used to discuss the possibility of democracy in Arab countries. The same is also done with Lebanon which, like Iraq is proof that democracy does not thrive in the Arab soil. Iraq and Lebanon both refute the delusion that we can have democracy……… Perhaps the best we can aspire to is a good-hearted tribal shaikh, a benevolent dictator who accepts the other……….”

Thus opines this regular writer in the Saudi daily Asharq Alawsat, who rarely passes up an opportunity to extol the virtues of absolute tribal petro-monarchy and octogenarian life-long dictators. Yes sir, the masters, the potentates, are hearing you, loud and clear. To them, democracy is quite inconvenient, as he and their many other writers know. They used the Iran election troubles last year to "make the point", as they used the Lebanon elections. Now they are, and will be, using the Iraqi elections troubles (already being stirred by their Allawi with his claims of fraud). They probably used the Bush-Gore dispute as well.
"
A good-hearted shaikh, a benevolent dictator": isn't that like saying 'a loving rapist'?
