Iran Sanctions: Lobbyists and Democratic Wusses…….

The lobbyists range from the bipartisan United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) to conservative think-tanks that opposed from the outset Mr Obama’s stated aim of dialogue and engagement with Tehran……. State and local authorities and individual shareholders are also being pressured to join a growing wave of public divestment from companies that fail to boycott Iran……. Groups opposed to Congress’s blanket approach to sanctions – including the National Iranian American Council (NIAC) and the dovish Israeli-linked Americans for Peace Now – said steps being contemplated would hurt the people of Iran rather than its leaders. “Also, by sanctioning foreign companies, you’re not sanctioning Iran – you’re sanctioning your allies,” said Trita Parsi of NIAC. Rightwing commentators have branded Mr Parsi – despite his expressed support for the Iranian opposition – as a stooge of Tehran…… Mr Ross is close to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), another group active in a campaign of divestment from companies doing business with Iran. In 2008, he spent time at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, an AIPAC creation, to co-chair a task force on deepening US-Israeli co-operation in the face of the Iranian nuclear challenge. Other pro-Israel lobby groups set up a task force in September to support tough sanctions legislation and issued a resources toolkit for activists that highlights the UANI campaign…………”

Somewhere in there is lurking John Bolton. I know it: he’s got to be in there somewhere. Or maybe he thinks even harmful tough sanctions are fit only for Democratic wusses.
Cheers
