Iranian Agents in the Land of Percy Cox and Gertrude Bell…………
“The director of the vetting committee for Iraq's parliamentary elections denied he was influenced by Iranian elites in his decision to ban political players. Iraq's Justice and Accountability Commission, a body tasked with preventing Baath Party members from returning to power, dismissed hundreds of candidates from taking part in the parliamentary election March 7. The commission faced charges that the decision was a political move meant to disqualify leading Sunni figures from taking part in a challenge against Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. A spokesman for the commission maintains they were acting under the authority of Iraqi law, denying the allegations of bias………..”
Among certain elements of Iraq’s former ruling elites, especially Baathists, the term “Iranian agent” is often a code word meaning an “Iraqi Shi’a”, especially one who is not amenable from their point of view. The old minority elite that ruled has become accustomed to power as an entitlement, an entitlement first bestowed by the British who were scared of the Shi’a (Shiite) Marja’iya and their open hostility to British occupation after WWI. From Winston Churchill to Percy Cox to Gertrude Bell, they all favored the Sunni minority as potentially “more docile”, to use some of their own terms. Some of them also wore Western attire, which made them more legitimate than those in native dishdashas.
