Economic Fatwas in al-Anbar………….
“Iraqi clerics in the western al-Anbar Province (Sunni) are leading a campaign against Iranian goods. Imams in (Sunni) mosques are calling on people to observe the boycott, calling Iranian good “haram” meaning Taboo. Shaikh Ali al-Rawi announced that 30 clergy have agreed on such a fatwa. He said this comes as a retaliation for Iranian interference in Iraqi affairs, adding that this fatwa was ‘not politically’ motivated but based on Shari’a rules about boycotting those who harm Muslims…… The head of the Iraqi Market Society in al-Anbar said that the boycott is a step in the direction of ending domination of Iranian goods in Iraq……..” Aljazeera
“Not politically motivated”. Could have fooled me, almost did.
I remember in the Middle East, when there were occasional calls for boycotts of American goods, they were often done by people who drove Cadillacs and smoked Marlboro (or Camel). They never worked. But then again, there were no sectarian passion involved in those cases, as they are today.
