Bahrain al-Qaeda Conviction, Sectarians R Us………..
“The Bahrain Superior Criminal Court has sentenced two men to five years for an attempt to blow up an American Naval Base east of the capital Manama. The suspects are a Jordanian who had been naturalized as and a Bahraini customs official….. The charges include possession of illegal weapons, membership in a terrorist organization (al-Qaeda), and having contacts with Jihadists……….”
The opposition contends that the rulers of Bahrain and the minority (Sunni) elite are partly responsible for this Salafi resurgence. They complain that they have fomented sectarianism with the aim of further marginalizing the country’s majority Shi’as (estimated at 70% or more). As part of the process, they encouraged a Salafi movement that had not existed in the country before, on the assumption that Salafis hate the Shi’as the most. They also have ruthlessly sought to change the demographic composition by speedily giving Bahraini citizenship to thousands of imported and ineligible foreigners who are of the right sect. They prefer to hire these imported people for the security and military jobs while the country’s original Shi’a natives go unemployed. This has led to continued unrest and clashes in the country.
Now it seems some of the Salafi chickens are coming home to roost. Meaning it was a stupid policy by the oligarchs in Manama mana manamanamana doo doo doo (courtesy of Sesame Street).
