Angry Economics of Love and Marriage in Egypt, Sex and the Single Leader…….
Media report that many young Egyptians are angry at their prime minister Ahmed Nazeef (his name can also mean Ahmed the Clean). The reason: he is marrying for a second time, to a career woman. They are not upset because he has divorced and is remarrying nor because he is taking a second additional wife. (I am not sure which one he is doing, but since he is not a royal prince, he is probably just divorced. The Egyptian elite is not that Saudiized, not yet, but I’ll keep you posted). They are angry because he can afford to marry. Marrying is becoming a difficult goal for many Egyptian young people. The cost of a wedding and the difficulty of finding work and housing are the culprits. By any measure, and as my own very educated guess, the city of Cairo is adequate for holding probably only about a quarter the number of people it holds now.
In a related story, Youm7 quotes the chief editor of Egypt’s al-Umma claiming that communal tensions between Christian Copts and Muslims in Egypt are not related to religion. He notes that they are mainly related to the emotional or sexual issues between young people, and that some politicians use the incidents for political purposes.
FYI: Youm7 means the Seventh Day, but I doubt these guys are Adventists.
