Captive Women of Aden, From Secular Socialism to Tribal Wahhabism………
“The women of Aden find themselves without any rights because of a joint invasion of the tribalism of North Yemen and Saudi Wahhabism.....… Afra’a Ali Saeed says that she remembers days when she could go out to the beach with her family wearing a blouse and pants, but that was twenty years ago, when she lived in the Popular Democratic Socialist republic of Yemen. Most women’s rights have vanished since 1990 when that country was unified with the tribal conservative North Yemen….. Not only women, but men also in Aden regret the worsening conditions of women’s rights these days. A man said about the Salih government that is dominated by Northerners that ‘There are no women rights here anymore’….. Many southern Yemeni city people are angry at what they see as the imposition of conservative values of the North where tribes and Sunni clergy have strong roles……..Violent protests have become common in the South during these last two years……...The secessionist movement in the South is a serious threat for Salih who also faces a northern Huthi rebellion as well as al-Qaeda…....…”
The women of South Yemen (Aden) have come a long way down: from British rule to secular socialism and finally to absolute tribal-military rule with heavy Wahhabi encroachment.
