Next OECD Member: High Tech, High Poverty, High Corruption, Fits Right in…………

“Israel has social inequalities, with a fifth of its population living under the poverty line and only about a half of its residents with incomes suitable for a developed country. This is what was stated in a report presented by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) secretary-general to Israel's socio-economic cabinet. The report concluded that if Israel joins the organization, it will be the most "unequal and poor" member in the organization, based on its social indicators……….” Yedioth Ahronoth

"Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz on Tuesday expressed confidence Israel would join the OECD this year even though certain corruption issues have yet to be resolved. "Things are going well," Steinitz said in remarks to public radio that coincided with a visit by Angel Gurria, secretary general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)….. But he acknowledged some issues were still outstanding, and that it was possible Israel would join with some "technical issues" still to be resolved on the implementation of anti-corruption measures. However the move met with opposition. MK Ahmad Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) called on the OECD not to accept Israel as a member during a meeting of Israeli and Palestinian journalists at the Knesset. Tibi claimed that Israel does not meet the organization's regulations of equality in respect to its treatment of Arab citizens. Other obstacles include a December report, in which the OECD said Israel "should be more proactive in detecting, investigating and prosecuting foreign bribery cases, notably those involving the defense industry."……………..” Yedioth Ahronoth

There is all that, but what about Mexico for income inequality and for corruption? I will not mention South Korea (I just did) and a couple of European countries. Even Britain is not exactly squeaky clean when it comes to international bribes as I have noted on this site for some time, especially in regard to bribes to Middle East potentates when selling weapons.
