Fatal Floods in the Saudi Desert…….

It is true that in some places when it rains it pours. Floods have caused the deaths of at least 48 people in the Saudi Red Sea port of Jeddah. Heavy rains also fell on Mecca, also in Hijaz, where about 2.5 million pilgrimages are estimated have gathered for the annual Hajj. Apparently fear of the Swine Flu has made much of a dent in the number of Muslim pilgrims this year. It is a common phenomenon, and a logical one, in the Gulf and Arabia Peninsula area, that heavy rains severely disrupt life mainly because heavy rains are not expected. They tend to overwhelm the drainage systems. I recall a time in Kuwait when floods destroyed many homes and our schools were closed for many days because displaced families were housed in them.
