Egypt’s Real Greens, Saga of Cairo’s Pigs, Finally Absolved?……

“As has become clear by now, raising pigs had a positive role in cleaning up Cairo, a role we did not appreciate until after we hastily evicted the farms and destroyed the pigs. True, the pigs were in inconvenient locations and stank up some areas, but we could have dealt with that........Now it has been proven that the pigs were the best way to get rid of the organic matter in the garbage…We should rebuild the swine industry in a way that eliminates the negative aspects and encourages the positive aspects of the pigs.......” Column in Al-ahram (Egyptian Government-owned daily)
Precisely the case I made three days ago on this blog! I have always been wary of the war that Egypt declared on its native (four-legged) pigs and the massacres that the regime and its army perpetrated against them under the pretext of fighting the Swine Flu.
I always thought that this was a war of choice not necessity, started by the regime to pander to local Islamic fundamentalists and to regional Salafi powers and moneybags.
I imagine, given the ineptitude of Egypt’s bureaucracy, that many of the pigs probably actually survived the initial onslaught and went into hiding. They should be pardoned immediately.
Who knows: real BLT’s at the Nile Hilton next?
