The Religious Right and Forces of Nature, Not Your Father’s Shaikh, Not Your Father’s Fatwas…….

“He is the biggest foe of secularists and socialists. He has had some controversial fatwas, the latest of which was that a pregnant Muslim woman can drink alcohol, if she is originally a Westerner who had converted. He said that if she had grown up in a drinking society, and she wishes to drink, it is okay, otherwise her child may be born disfigured..….He also fatwad that the national soccer team can break their fast in Ramadan, and that people can use ‘tools’ for sexual intercourse, including but not confined to masturbation, rather than commit sin and adultery.……..”

No comment on this particular Moroccan’s fatwas. I imagine his argument is: why try to stem a tide, a force of nature……
Still, the American Christian religious right, including Bush, never came out openly for this last alternative of the shaikh, they just talked about ‘abstention’ rather than that un-presidential safe alternative. They called for abstention even as some of their politicos were busy not abstaining, in fact doubling down, expanding to the world of ‘little black books’…….
