Iran: Ahmadinejad and his Women

Some Iranian clerics have demanded that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reconsider his choice of three women as cabinet ministers in his new government. Parliament will have to confirm his nominees and M Taqi Rahbar, who leads a clerics’ group in Parliament has said that “there are religious doubts about the limits of the abilities of women and their skills of management”.......

Mr. Ahmadinejad cannot easily drop the three women he has selected. They are not exactly ‘feminist’ models of the Western type; they are very conservative (not in the Sarah Palin mold either, they are almost certainly more intelligent than the Thrilla from Wasilla).

During the post-election protests he and Khamenai discovered the power of Iranian women who took to the streets with the men. They should remember that women were important during the actual Revolution of 1978-79 that was eventually dominated by the mullahs after the shah’s departure. Cheers and Ramadan Kareem
