Are Egyptians Happy Masochists Under Mubarak? Bin Laden, Bush, The NFL, and Microbrews
“The poll was taken by something called the Center for information and Decision-making Support at the council of ministers, shows that 22% consider government performance very good, while 36% consider it good, and 31% consider it acceptable. Only 11% of the sample of 1,152 consider the performance bad!........”
There are three explanations:
- The good people of Egypt really are happy with the regime, which would make them the biggest bunch of masochists in the world.
- They did not understand the question, which is possible.
- The poll is “official” and official organizations in Arab countries do not like to offend or contradict the oligarchs. They did things the way Arab elections are done: they tipped the scale toward the 90% mark.In other words it was a watermelon poll.
What is it with Arabs and the magic 90% number? Obama would be walking on air if he had just 60% approval. George W Bush got over 60% for a while only because people compared him with a bearded Saudi terror master who dwells in Afghan-Pakistani caves, has multiple wives, does not like baseball, and does not understand the difference between the NFC and the AFC. They also suspected in the Deep South that he doesn't go to segregated Church on Sundays.
Old Osama probably never ever watched the Super Bowl, and could not care what microbrew is best for NFC playoffs and which is best for AFC playoffs. (Actually I understand that it depends on which teams are playing, regardless of what Faith Hill says).
Okay, I is obvious that I am gearing up for the new season….but probably not Osama, and neither Husni By-God Mubarak, ruler of Egypt for 29 unopposed years of stagnation, soon to be taken over and extended by his Dauphin, Gamal, the son who will extend the reign some thirty or forty years more of unopposed rule. Ugh, the prospect of it: another frigging ruling dynasty!
All this makes Gamal Abdel Nasser look real good: he always did to me compared to this current schmuck. Probably looks so even to his Israeli cousins now (at least they knew where he stood).
