Down to Earth: Of Gulf Women, Housemaids, and Tribal Newspapers

There is a reasonable voice after all:
“A (male) writer in the al-Madinah newspaper writes that: “Do we accept for our female relative to become housemaids? I would not accept it for any Saudi woman, rich or poor”. A female writer in the same daily writes that: “Saudis becoming housemaids is the beginning of other falls. …The minimum right of a Saudi woman is that she be honored, but now she has lost her right, and after this she will become just like the other women in the world. There used to be a difference, but now there will be no difference.”…..

“In my whole life I have never read writings that are so racist, so detestable, so aggressively against the others……”

I have, many times, over many years, all over newspapers across the Gulf, and some in a few other Arab newspapers as well. But mostly in our silly smug tribal newspapers on the Gulf.
