Egypt: Falafel Outsourced to Israel?

It is true that Egypt imports the falafel powder (flour) from Israel, but we provide the pickles that go in the sandwich. So, it is not true that Egypt has died while giving birth to us. You can feel confident and be reassured when you notice that the sewage system is moving up and sown, which is an indication that there is some political life above it….

Until we meet again tomorrow, God willing, but please read page 45 of the constitution which explains how to make a certain dish of okra…….

At least now I understand that Egypt has outsourced its famed falafel to Israel. I already knew that Egypt, breadbasket of the Roman Empire, has outsourced much of its other food needs to other countries. This has been going on for about thirty years. Under the current regime of stagnation and other things much worse.
Just like Americans have been outsourcing all their industries to Asia since the Reagan corporatist  counter-revolution.

Speaking of which, an older US government study tells us the following:

In 1960 Egypt was self-sufficient in almost all basic food commodities, with the exception of wheat, of which the country had a self-sufficiency ratio (domestic production in relation to consumption) of 70 percent. The self-sufficiency ratio declined dramatically for most products during the 1970s and 1980s, and economists began to speak of a serious food gap in Egypt. Food security, in the sense of adequate production and provision of food to consumers at relatively low prices, also became a linchpin of agricultural and development policies……

Maybe it is partly all those peasants closing shop and heading to Cairo, Alexandria, and the Persian Gulf states. I forgot Israel; of course it can be a plot to force Egypt to import her beloved falafel from Bibi Netanyahu and Lieberman (Avigdor, not Joe).
Cheers
