Iraq, Article Seven, and the Lesson of Versailles. Ahmadinejad’s ‘Wise Iranian’ Resigns

“Clinton promises Iraqi foreign minister Zibari to get Iraq out of Article Seven of the UN sanctions….”
This would be a positive step toward normalization of Iraq’s relations with her neighbors. This issue rankles and could keep relations poisoned and subject to manipulation by various politicians.
Versailles makes a good lesson in what to avoid in this case (not the palace: the Versailles Treaty and specifically its punitive provisions on German reparations). This is why it is important for Iraq’s neighbors to show political courage and leadership on this issue, provided that remaining border issues are ironed out.
“Isfandiyar R Meshai has resigned his new position as vice president of Iran, after his pro-Israeli and pro-American leanings became known as too controversial for conservative clerics and law-makers..…” Senate Republicans would probably have loved to bring similar pressure to bear on the wise Latina.
This is another confusing signal by a bewildered regime that is not sure of itself. It could mean the Iran is becoming politically even more of a multi-layered society. The protesters did not get rid of Ahmadinejad, but they may have managed to force the political system into being more open: at the least they have killed the political apathy of the past four years, hopefully for good.
Cheers
