A China Syndrome in Tehran. Jefferson the Polygamist

It looks like the unelected Ayatollah Khamenai and his supporters are trying to clamp down on the protesters. Sketchy news are beginning to trickle out of Tehran now, without reliable news reporters to corroborate them. Protests are continuing, but perhaps at a slower pace. This can be deceiving: forty day mourning anniversaries tend to accelerate and magnify the protests. The forty day protests did that during the 1979 revolution. They will be upon us sometime in late July.

For now, though, the ruling clergy may have pulled a Chinese trick, as after Tiananmin. But revolutions have many chapters, and we have seen the first one of this new Iranian rebellion. There are already reports of a split or two among the powerful clergy. Besides, Iranians are stubborn and rebellious by nature: it is partly a national trait (they pulled a Constitutional Revolution in 1906 and the shah of the time succumbed), and it is partly their Shi’a faith which is conditioned for over 14 centuries on being in opposition to those in power.
Stay tuned: it ain't over til some Ayatollah sings.

The West hijacks the Iranian protests… alQuds alArabi (London)

Egyptian Government Daily: The International Community's Caution is Sending the Wrong Message to the Iranian Regime… Memri , which is always ready to quote official and quasi-official media of the democratic Jeffersonian Arab states like Egypt and the democratic Jeffersonian tribal monarchies. That is okay, Jefferson was a polygamist in his own unique way (many in Virginia were: remember Sally Hemings?).
