Obama's Cairo Speech: Reactions from the ‘Other’ Side
“Obama hopes for a new beginning with the Islamic World, and emphasizes the two-state solution in Palestine…”
“Imam Khamenai calls on Washington to change its policy in deed and not only in words…”
“(Sen) Mitchell: the Israelis lied to us over the past years….”
The above three quotes were from Al-Manar TV, of Hezbullah which is probably too busy with the ongoing Lebanese election campaign these days. But al-Manar was not too busy to note that “President Obama is the first sitting president to be among the Forbes 100 most influential people in the world. His pictures, which adorn many magazine covers, have blurred the line between politics and celebrity…”
“In a speech on the 20th anniversary of the death of Imam Khomeini: Ali Khamenai says that the change that the American administration talks about does not come only through speeches an slogans, but through real and fundamental change….” al-alam (Iran)
“Egyptian Foreign Minister Abu el-Gheit denied any disagreements between Cairo and Riyadh over changes in President Obama’s itinerary to the Middle East so that he would go to Saudi Arabia before Egypt.…"
Which usually means that there are, or were, disagreements.
“Obama stopped in Riyadh first in order to seek the advice from the Custodian of the Two Holy Shrines before his Cairo speech..…” All Saudi media headlines.
“Shia’s in Egypt angered for not being invited to the Obama speech at Cairo University…..other for providing the regime with weapons and tools of torture..” If it makes them feel any better, the Shia’s of Saudi Arabia were not invited either to his talks with King Abdullah. Actually I am not sure what to make of this one, since there are not many Shi'as in Egypt, at least not openly- maybe they are like the Jews in old Spain and Portugal?
Cheers
