Iranians Haggle Over Oil Bonds. The Old Woman and Saudi Family Values. Netanyahu, Saudi Elections, and Palestine

For his part, Iran’s Ahmadinejad has suddenly promised Iranians that they will all get “bonds” whereby they will share in the profits of the petroleum sector- in the event that he is re-elected….The bonds will be issued to all Iranians within Iran and those who live overseas… Not to be outdone, one of his rivals, Mahdi Karubi, has also promised something along the same lines… Elaph
But Iran’s official site al-Alam has nothing on this. It is getting hairy in Tehran, and not just because of all the regulation-hairy clerics and politicians (in fairness, even the anti-regime Iranians who ferquent Fox News are quite hairy: I acn imagine some of them in turbans- but not Cavuto or O'Reilly). I guess this is the Iranian equivalent to the silly Republican mantra of “Drill baby drill, drill now, drill here…then you can shoot baby, shoot, shoot here, shoot now…”. Well maybe it is not nearly as silly as the GOPer mantra- but they got McCain to adopt it in desperation, even some Democrats were wavering by October.

Divine intervention saved a 75 year old Saudi woman from certain death after she was involved in a serious accident while driving her car.…Her husband is dead and she has no sons, only daughters, so she has been driving herself for 40 years in order to do her errands….The accident involved the lady and an Egyptian driver.. alriyadh
I bet the Egyptian driver was at fault too. I hope he got the worst of it too.
Something is going on in the male kingdom. There have been more auto accidents reported in the kingdom involving women drivers. It is possible that with time women will be driving without any law being passed about it. It may just happen, if enough women start driving at the same time, nobody can stop them. The rulers certainly don’t care, they just are too afraid of the Wahhabi shaikhs to openly advocate it, yet.

It is becoming too damn expensive for many families to hire full-time drivers and they always must have a close male relative of a woman in the car (that is in case the Devil decides to join the woman and the male driver if they are alone: if you get my drift)- quite a production. Contrary to the silly legends in the West, there are many lower middle-class as well as downright poor families in the Kingdom, as in other Gulf states, who cannot afford such luxury. Soon it will be that only the royals and the very rich merchant families will have drivers, just like other Gulf oil states. Kind of back to square one- n’est-ce pas?

Saudi government has announced the extension of the terms of the Municipal Council members, those elected and those appointed. This means that the new elections will be delayed for two more years… Elaph Somebody somewhere may be having second thoughts. I am not sure why: Hezbullah is hardly likely to win any elections over there (actually I think they can't even run candidates). Maybe it has to do with the reported power struggles within the ruling family. Or maybe, like other Arab regimes, they will postpone all elections until after the Palestinian issue is solved. Which, by the way, is the Netanyahu position, except that he wants to postpone a solution with the Palestinians until after the Iranian issue (nuclear issue) is resolved. That will most likely mean that there may never be a solution with the Palestinians- since the Iranian issue will not be solved to his liking.
