The Shaikh, the Fetus, and the Chaste Mother
It is spring!
“The Shaikh of al-Azhar has issued a controversial fatwa that the a rape fetus can be aborted, on condition that the girl (i.e mother) be of good reputation, pure, and chaste……” al-ArabiyaJust what we needed, more litmus tests, of the kind everybody denies using but everybody loves to use. Of the kind we will be hearing about a lot between now and next autumn from senators and other assorted windbags.
The good shaikh did not specify how to ascertain a 'girl's' purity or chastity. Maybe he was talking beyond the mere 'physical' and wandering into the realm of metaphysics. That's OK, his colleagues will force him to issue a series of explanatory....explanations.
