A Battle of Algiers: The New Pieds-Noirs. New Blame Game in the Mideast. Of Holy Mother Russia Polygamists and Stoly

"Bouteflika wins a third term by 90.2% of the vote..." Algerian Interior Minister, appointed by the same Bou.....
In Algeria the current president has won his third term in true Arab fashion: his own interior minister has announced that he won by over 90% of the vote- just slightly less than Kim Jong Il got in Pyongyang two days ago. One pissed Arab website claimed that he won by 99.99% and that turnout was 105%: he was half joking but it can happen in the New Middle East.

The party of Mr Bouteflika (father of Teflika, wtf that may be) has been in power since 1962, when the French agreed to withdraw from Algeria and opted for mass repatriation of the Pieds-noirs (the kind that produced the grape and imbibed, not the kind with feathers and tomahawks). NFL rule soon led to mass immigration of millions of other Algerians to France- although unlike the European Pieds-noirs these did not threaten to take over by starting vineyards: they just worked in picking the grapes. And their feet are mostly brown.
Next step may be for Bouteflika to become fully integrated into the Arab system by stopping all pretensions at free elections and getting himself elected president for life. He can start by making the correct noises about a new non-existent Shi'a threat to his country, a ploy the Egyptian and Moroccan oligarchies have been using more intensively lately. Then he would have come full circle: from a leftist 'revolutionary' to a conforming polygamous and tribal potentate (but he would need to take a couple of more wives first to join that club- n'est-ce pas?).

Summits: one down, any more to go?: "The institution of Arab summits should be ended..." Opined chief editor of Asharq Alawsat, a Saudi daily reportedly owned by Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz, that has the good sense to publish from London. Another editor advocated that all Arab summits be held in Cairo (he was too embarrassed to suggest his first choice, Riyadh).
I wondered about these strange new positions, until I read the results of the latest Doha summit: it was not the 'let's change the focus to an Iranian threat now that peace has broken all over Palestine-Israel' that the Saudis had wanted. I also discovered another reason: Libya, and the erratic Colonel Muammar Qaddafi, will host and chair the next summit. Which means that the Saudi king will certainly boycott, although he may send Egypt's Mubarak.

You figure it out: Arab media (I saw it on Aafaq first) report that president Kadiroff of Chechnya, the one recognized by Russia, has called on his people to vigorously take up polygamy. This would be against the laws of Holy Mother Russia, of which Chechnya is a part. He is supposed to have said that "I am convinced that we need polygamy these days." Yes, women, more women, but no song and dance- and presumably no Stoly. No na zdorovia for him. That last one, even though I am putting the words in his mouth, is proof, if any were needed that the Chechens are not real Russians. I bet he doesn't consume borscht or peroshky either.
He did, however, praise Vladimir Putin, calling him some kind of a savior (I know it is Good Friday, but no, not THAT kind of savior).

Cheers and do svedaniya tovarishchii
